FAQ |
Is the mentorship programme exclusively for under-resourced students?
Our mentorship programme is designed to assist under-resourced students who can hardly afford private consultation services, to unleash their full potential. We will prioritise under-resourced applicants studying in government / aided / caput schools and / or from low-income backgrounds. That being said, we holistically review every single application, so if you are not sure, just apply! We will assess the student's academic ability and financial need through the application form and an interview session (as well as a mock aptitude test in some cases), and may ask for additional documents (including financial proof) to assist us in making a decision.
Does Access Abroad Hong Kong only accept mentees who are applying to G5 (Cambridge, Oxford, LSE, UCL, Imperial) universities?
No! Although most of our mentees do select G5 universities as their first choice, we also accept mentees who have specific reasons for choosing non-G5 programmes (their target course is only available at another university, or the particular programme they are applying to is renowned at another university, e.g. Psychology at the University of Bath, War Studies at KCL, etc.), and who also have demonstrable potential at getting a scholarship. We will consider each applicant on a case-by-case basis regarding their background and reasons for applying to the programme(s).
The reasoning behind this is that we would want our mentees to be reasonably competitive for HKSES, which is the only major full-ride non-Oxbridge scholarship available for Hong Kong students, and HKSES highly values global university and subject rankings when considering applications. Often, we find that applicants underestimate their ability and chances, so we would encourage applicants to aim at G5 (if the programme they want to study is available), as this increases their chances of getting a scholarship. I want to apply to UK universities but my family cannot afford the high costs of studying abroad. How can AAHK support me?
Apart from university admissions, our mentorship programme also covers scholarship applications. As the only organisation in Hong Kong providing mentorships for scholarship applications, our dedicated team has immense experience in helping you navigate complicated scholarship application procedures. Services we provide include (but are not limited to) information sessions and sharings for specific scholarships, scholarship application form and personal statement feedback, as well as scholarship interview training. These services are all provided by current scholars!
I can hardly afford the fees relating to my UK university applications (fees for IELTS, UCAS admissions, aptitude tests, etc.) How can AAHK support me?
We understand that the related expenses (IELTS, entrance examinations, etc.) of enrolling in a UK university will impose a significant financial burden on some students. In view of this, starting in 2022, AAHK will provide financial assistance to students in need, helping them subsidise most of their UK application fees in order to reduce the financial burden on students’ families. For example, we previously funded a mentee’s travel expenses to Singapore to attend an interview session for her Veterinary medicine course application. We have also subsidised all the application costs of a mentee on Full School Textbook Subsidy, which amounted to over 6000 HKD.
When will Access Abroad Hong Kong notify me of the mentorship applications results? When will I get a matching mentor?
Every year hundreds of students apply to our mentorship programme, and we have to carefully consider the details of each and every application. Please note that the number of mentors for certain subjects is very limited, and mentors will be matched with selected applicants on a first-come-first-served basis.
Applicants interested in applying for the University of Cambridge/ Oxford (for all subjects), or Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary in any university (UCAS Deadline: 16 Oct 2023): Most of the admitted mentees will begin to receive their matched mentors by late July. All other applicants (UCAS Deadline: 31 Jan 2024): Most of the admitted mentees will begin to receive their matched mentors by early August. How many times will mentors and mentees meet each month?
We do not stipulate the number of times students will meet with their mentors each month, it only depends on the arrangements between the students and their mentors. But in general, the following schedule will be used as a reference: an introductory call to get to know each other + 1.5 hours focusing on personal statement + 1.5 hours focusing on the aptitude test + 3 hours focusing on the interview.
Why does Access Abroad Hong Kong provide a free mentorship programme?
Access Abroad Hong Kong is a charity that believes education can unlock unlimited possibilities for bright young minds, and as such is dedicated to widening access to Oxbridge and other UK universities beyond those from wealthy, privileged backgrounds.
