Our Decade in Stories

As part of our ten year anniversary, we have collected 20 stories of the most inspiring and engaged members of our community. From our founder, to past co-directors, to mentees from a variety of different backgrounds, these stories have defined our organisation’s growth and impact.

Daniel Yeh (2019)

La Salle College

Working as a Software Engineer in London

I built the first-generation mentorship application processing system, and learned everything as I went along: GCP, backend Node, frontend React, TypeScript. What stayed with me most was that I would code on my work laptop during the day for my summer internship, then at 5pm switch the Thunderbolt cable over to my personal laptop and continue building the system. I was really happy that the system was launched in time and ran fairly smoothly. After that, we were also able to find successors, and it was passed down from one generation to the next. The system is now already in its third generation, with a dedicated student tech team developing it. It has now become an indispensable part of AAHK — not bad for something that started life as a “this should probably work” project.

My time serving AAHK has led me to become more confident in my ability to change others’ lives for the better, and more proactive in contributing to meaningful causes. Before joining AAHK, my self-confidence was at a low. Comparing myself to fellow freshers at Cambridge, I seemed like such an imposter. Nonetheless, conducting mentoring work and later contributing to organising outreach activities helped me to realise my power in bringing positive impacts to others, and find my purpose in life to help others, especially those coming from a less-privileged background like mine. I will certainly apply that attitude during my medical career in Hong Kong.

Ethan Chan (2020)

Working in Hong Kong Charity Sector

Our outreach programmes are the “prologue” to so many mentees’ stories; they show students “stories like theirs”, like when two students from my alma mater got into Oxbridge through our mentorship. And in our mentorship, each mentor acts as an “editor”; when I read a mentees’ scholarship statement, I help bring their meaningful experiences and genuine aspirations together into a coherent narrative. Yet, fascinating stories still need investment to get published; I personally fundraised for two underprivileged mentees, securing 2 million HKD to enable them to take up their Oxbridge offers and “put their stories to print”. AAHK embodies the power of a story: our “library” now spans a decade of lives forever changed. Finally, guiding such amazing people to write and tell their stories has shaped my own, as I now embark on a career in the charity and social impact sector.

Jan Chan (2022)

Private Fundraising Case Arranged by AAHK

When I initally did not secure a scholarship, I thought I would have to give up my place; however, AAHK set up a special fundraising case, eventually helping me secure an alternative source of funding which enabled me to clear the last hurdle of my dream to study at Oxford. AAHK thus empowered me to study something in which I have genuine interest, rather than have to study a financially-stable degree I was less passionate about. Apart from Oxford, I also spent my third year in Brazil for my year abroad, where I completed an internship in a rainforest and an exchange programme at the University of São Paulo. AAHK gave me the confidence and courage to pursue what truly drives me, and that shift in mindset is perhaps the most lasting impact it has had on me.

The most wonderful part of AAHK was gradually developing friendships with people whom I first knew as mentors, mentees, and colleagues. AAHK is full of like-minded individuals who share a passion for equality and social impact, and we all have similar values. The friendships I built through AAHK are ones I would cherish for life. I also see AAHK as an incubator for future social impact leaders, and I can't wait to see how the student leaders I met at AAHK continue to scale their impact and give back to the broader community beyond their time in AAHK.

I found out about AAHK through their Essay Competition, where I got to go on an all-expenses paid trip to Cambridge and London. It was surreal to walk among old castles and cozy townhouses that I have only seen through the tiny screen of my phone, since Cambridge has always felt like a dream out of reach. And there was another added layer of disbelief when I remembered that this free trip was by virtue of the commitment of a group of university students who dedicated countless hours to make this experience a reality for me. So, after getting in I returned to AAHK as a Co-Head of Partnerships. Here, where everyone spends their Saturday nights in meetings and spreadsheets to find ways to help our mentees just that much more effectively, I am never made to apologise for being idealistic, for believing I can be the person I needed when I was younger, and for dedicating my time to that belief.

Growing up, I was pretty set on doing law. Without the living examples of my mentors and fellow mentees, humanities had felt obscure and impractical. AAHK showed me that university education could be so much more than vocational training, that there was far more flexibility in what I could become than I'd been led to believe. That lesson continues, as I watch people from the AAHK community go on to extraordinarily different things. AAHK didn't just change my subject choice. It changed the way I look at education, and at my own life.

I didn’t just get incredible help on my application, but I also felt genuinely cared for: I truly felt like I had a therapist, coach, and consultant all in one. AAHK enlightened me as to how there’s actually a community of super talented people, simply trying to help out kids like me without wanting anything in return. AAHK made me believe I could do it, I have the potential, even for a normal girl whose parents have never gone to university, whose family or school had no info regarding these prestigious universities and applications. AAHK made me believe that there are selfless transactions in this world, and that even at such prestigious levels people are at their core simply quite human.

Three Branches of our Campaign

To ensure no mentee will have to give up their Oxbridge place due to a lack of funds, we are broadening our emergency fundraising network to create a “donors' circle”, and will explore creating Hong Kong’s first merit-and-need-based UK scholarship in partnership with an existing philanthropic donor or foundation.

We also aim to strengthen our capacity and regular sponsor and donor network, to expand our internal reserves and improve our financial sustainability.

Our 10th Anniversary Dinner will be on September 11th, 2026 at the Hong Kong Club. Stay tuned for more details!

How you can support us!

Your contribution helps us provide mentorship, resources, and opportunities to students who need them most.

Since we have virtually no overhead as a volunteer-run organisation working primarily online, all of our financial resources are funnelled directly to support our programmes and beneficiaries, including:

Subsidising application fees for our most needy mentees, including IELTS registration fees, international UCAS applications fees, and admissions test application fees
Supporting our annual summer bootcamp, including venue costs, learning materials, and promotion
Sponsoring our essay competition, enabling students to visit Cambridge and London in an all-expenses paid trip
Increasing our reach and community by covering our social media marketing and community management costs
Emergency fundraising for mentees who have been admitted to Oxford or Cambridge, missed out on all other sponsorships and funding sources, and are therefore unable to fund their studies

To ensure that all of the above can continue to be funded, we are hoping to expand our network of organisational sponsors and donors, to build our capacity and ensure our long term financial sustainability, especially as our existing grants wind down. You are also welcome to schedule a chat with our team to learn more about us, or potentially to arrange a corporate sponsorship or scholarship programme partnership.

We are seeking a Key Programme Partner: to transform our legacy and establish a new Scholarship Fund. This scholarship would provide funding for our mentees who have:

Been admitted to Oxford, Cambridge, and other top UK universities
Applied to and missed out on all other scholarships and funding sources
Family assets (given certain exemptions) less than the total cost of study

After scholars are chosen, they will be subject to a means test to calculate the amount awarded (to cover the gap between the cost of study and available family assets, with certain exemptions).

We do not currently have the organisational capacity to run this ambitious new programme alone. This is why we are searching for an interested and value-aligned partner to co-create this scholarship together. We envision AAHK handling recruitment and selection, while our partner would support with funding and administration (while also being involved in final selection). The details depend on the needs of the partner organisation, and we are open to different arrangements; if you are interested, please let us know and we will share a more detailed proposal!

On top of this, we are also hoping to set up a “donor’s circle” and collect a list of pledges, such that when our next emergency fundraising case arises, we have a strong and supportive network ready to step in and financially support our mentees, to prevent them from having to give up their place.

In addition to financial support, we also welcome non-monetary support, including:

Media organisation outreach: We hope to connect with English and Chinese media companies and new media content creators to expand our reach. In particular, we have a 10-year story pitch this year. Please put us in touch with media organisations which may be interested!

Donor and sponsor referrals: To make our work more sustainable, we are always looking to expand our donor and sponsor network by connecting with like-minded companies, organisations, and individuals

In-kind event and programme support: By providing us with free/low-cost venues and/or smaller services such as printing support, we can focus our energy and funds on the participants of our events and programmes, such as our annual summer bootcamp and essay competition

Human resources: To sustain and increase our impact as a Section 88 charity, we are looking for pro-bono professional support, such as legal assistance, accounting and auditing, website management, and marketing

Participant network referral: We are always excited to reach as many students, parents, and teachers from local public/non-fee-paying Band 1 secondary schools as possible to increase our outreach
